Article Comment: Distribution networks versus Content20 April 2005 Alan Kohler's article on broadband distribution of bits in Australia outlines how the incumbent (Telstra) will be challenged for broadband supremacy now that ADSL2 has become 'good enough' to provide the triple play (voice, data, pay TV) over copper. Up to five ADSL2 networks may be constructed in Australia using the installed copper. With alternative high-capacity providers, Telstra may have lost control of the distribution network to customers. (The Age newspaper) Roger McNamee's article on why content and distribution should be separate. He suggests that content providers who try to control content distribution too closely will have lower revenues than providers who use multiple channels to their customers. He also notes that the traditional distribution networks are increasingly being out-competed by newer distribution methods. (The New Normal blog) Andrew Odlyzko's paper ["Why Content is not King" (PDF, 122Kb)] on the difference in market revenues between the distribution (access) networks and the content carried over them.
