Article Comment26 February 2005 allAfrica.com: South Africa: Phone in for Free Electricity - A pilot project using a customer generated SMS (via their mobile phone) to enable an electricity allowance. The customer sends their meter number to Eskom via SMS, receives a unique 20 digit number in a response. This number is then entered into the meter to enable access to their electricity. This approach avoids the need for customers to visit the provider's offices - a benefit in remote areas.
